A Global Consensus for Peace in Sudan

The team here at Enough has been making the rounds of late on Sudan policy, and in discussions with senior officials from the U.S., Europe, the African Union and the United Nations, it has been striking how much commonality there has been in views. Almost everyone agrees there needs to be a much greater multilateral investment in Sudan's peace process with the U.S. positioned to play a genuinely strategic role. There is also a clear sense that while neither north nor south is eager to return to a military confrontation, the lagging pace in implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and ...

Pirates, Hawks, and Doves

Pirates, Hawks, and Doves
“Pirates, Hawks, and Doves” sounds like a children’s game. But last week, in the midst of the piracy drama off the Somali coast, it was a game played by adults acting like children. Media pundits and partisan operatives were quick to seize on the unusual hostage crisis at sea involving the cargo ship Maersk Alabama to frame the incident as a “major foreign policy test” of the Obama administration. Partisan critics lambasted the administration for taking days to seek a negotiated solution, seeing in this approach a hesitation to use force when it seemed to be the obvious solution. The ...

Youth United for Darfur Rally in Chicago

Youth United for Darfur Rally in Chicago
In 2007, many Chicago-area student groups were taking action against genocide, but their efforts were not coordinated. So I started connecting with area student groups and created Youth United for Darfur to address the need for cooperation between these groups. In April 2008, we held the United for Darfur Conference, which aimed to educate students about the genocide in Darfur and how to effectively take action against it. Professional activists, Lost Boys of Sudan, and state legislators spoke at the event, which drew over 150 students. After successfully organizing the conference, Youth United for Darfur participants decided that Chicago youth ...

Let’s Not Forget About the South

Let's Not Forget About the South
Most of us know all too well by now that Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. In response, he expelled 13 international and 3 domestic life-sustaining aid organizations. While this current crisis is undoubtedly dire and deserves the world’s attention, I want to make sure that the international community doesn’t forget about Southern Sudan, which is facing a crisis of its own. I recently met with a delegation of several representatives from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), the party that directs the Government of ...
