John Prendergast to Speak at Duke University

November 11, 2013 - November 15, 2013

Human rights activist and best-selling author John Prendergast will be Visiting Practitioner in Residence at the Nicholas School of the Environment from November 11 -15. 

John Prendergast will speak to students about how they can make a difference through  grassroots activism.

Prendergast has worked for peace in Africa for nearly thirty years and is the co-founder of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity affiliated with the Center for American Progress. He has worked for the Clinton White House, the State Department, two members of Congress, the National Intelligence Council, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group, and the U.S. Institute of Peace.  He has been a Big Brother for over 25 years, as well as a youth counselor and a basketball coach. Last year he gave the 2012 Ferguson Family Distinguished Lectureship in the Environment and Society.

Nov. 11 – 5 p.m., FHI Garage, Bay 4, Smith Warehouse – "Lessons for Making a Difference Globally and Locally." Reception at 4:30 pm. (This talk is co-sponsored by the Duke Human Rights Center at the Franklin Humanities Institute)

Nov. 13 – 7 p.m., Love Auditorium – Screening of "Blood in the Mobile" followed by Q&A with John Prendergast on conflict minerals in the Democratic Republic of Congo and regulatory solutions, including Dodd-Frank. Reception at 6:30 p.m.

Nov. 15 – 10-11:30 a.m., A158 LSRC – "Conflict and Natural Resources in the Sudans," co-hosted by Environmental Institutions Seminar and student group, Environmental Conflict Working Group (ECWG). Lunch immediately following this talk will be hosted by ECWG.
