John Prendergast at University of Massachusetts

November 10, 2016

Enough Project Founding Director John Prendergast will be speaking at the University of Massachusetts on Thursday, November 10th, where he will connect the dots between our demand for consumer electronics and the deadliest war in the world since the Holocaust.  It turns out the minerals that are used to power our cell phones and laptops originate in part from the Congo, where armed groups vie for control of those minerals.  A major consumer movement has emerged that is changing the equation for Apple, Intel and the U.S. government, which in turn is having an impact in the war zones of the Congo.  Mr. Prendergast will also highlight the role that student activism has played in the Congo campaign and elsewhere.  Despite all the cynicism — activism works.  Drawing on decades of experience with social movements that have had a major impact in Africa, he will provide a number of vignettes in which students and celebrities have made a difference on issues of importance to them.
