Building Peace in Post-Conflict Societies: Looking Back in Order to Look Forward

In honor of Ambassador and Professor Joseph Melrose, a distinguished panel will discuss Peace-Building in Post-Conflict Societies – Lessons from Africa. This will be the inaugural conference of the Joseph H. Melrose Center for Global Civic Engagement.

1:15-3:00 PM: Panel Discussion: Peace-Building in Post-Conflict Societies – Lessons from Africa, Musser Auditorium, Pfahler Hall

  • Mrs. Maria Brewer, U.S. Department of State with posts in Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan
  • Mr. Edward Kawa, Counsellor, Embassy of Sierra Leone
  • Mr. Sasha Lezhnev, Associate Director of Policy at the Enough Project to End Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity and Founding Director, Grassroots Reconciliation Group
  • Dr. Chris Mahony, Visiting Research Fellow at Georgetown University Law Center and Advisor to World Bank and UN Development Program
  • Moderator: Dr. Ann Karreth, Assistant Professor of Politics & International Relations, Ursinus College

3:30-5:00 PM: Screening of award-winning documentary Sierra Leone: Journey from War to Peace and discussion with director, Terry Leary, Musser Auditorium, Pfahler Hall

Ms. Leary was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sierra Leone from 1986-1988 and worked as the Representative for the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Office of Transition Initiatives from 1999-2001 during the conflict in Sierra Leone. Ms. Leary has over 30 years of experience in development work in crisis zones all over the world.
