President Obama’s Special Envoy to Sudan Scott Gration will brief the media on his recent travels to garner renewed attention to the peace process in Sudan. His remarks, which will take place at the State Department this morning at 10:15, will focus on the current status of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the peace deal that ended the civil war between northern and southern Sudan in 2005 but that has become increasingly fragile.
Special Envoy Gration recently returned from a tour to Beijing, Doha, and London, where he met with various actors considered key to reigniting a comprehensive peace process in Sudan. Renewed attention from various actors is acutely important as Sudan moves toward national elections next year and a referendum in 2011 to decide whether Sudan will remain united or split in two.
