New York Times Reports LRA In And Out Of Darfur

A month after the Enough Project confirmed a contingent of the Lord’s Resistance Army, or LRA, had taken refuge in areas of south Darfur, the New York Times’ Jeffrey Gettleman corroborated the report in his piece on the deadly rebel group that came out this weekend.

The article, which looked at the Ugandan army’s deployment of former LRA rebels in their strategy to apprehend rebel leader Joseph Kony, emphasized the strategic problems created by the rebel group’s use of Darfur as safe haven:

Mr. Kony seems to be circulating between Central African Republic and the Darfur region of Sudan, which is a problem for the Ugandans, because while they have permission from the authorities in Congo, Central African Republic and southern Sudan, they are not allowed to cross into northern Sudan.

With LRA attacks becoming bolder, and more frequent, in northeastern Congo and the Central African Republic, U.S. cooperation and assistance to regional forces is more critical than ever.
