A “deteriorating” humanitarian situation in Jebel Marra in the Darfur region is getting the attention of U.S. embassy officials in Khartoum, Sudan, who expressed concern at what is being described as “critical levels of severe acute malnutrition” despite a concerted effort by aid agencies to arrest the worsening situation. In a statement, the embassy said the situation demands a concerted multi-sector response.
“Despite an active response by the United Nations (UN) and various relief agencies, the situation remains dire and must be urgently addressed through coordinated action and humanitarian access to all areas affected by this crisis without hindrance.”
The dire situation exposes the Sudanese government’s previous attempts of preventing aid from reaching the Jebel Marra area. In this regard, the government of Sudan bears primary responsibility for the worsening situation in Jebel Marra due to its twin policies of utilizing violent militia in the conflict in Darfur and blocking aid agencies from the area.
