Congo: “I Am 14. I Have Never Known Peace”

Posted by Laura Heaton on June 11, 2009

As we highlighted last week, Condition: Critical, an advocacy group based in eastern Congo, has produced a series of videos about the effects of decades of violence on young people in the region. The third video in this three-part series – Fight – profiles boys who joined armed groups at an early age and now struggle to reintegrate into society. These former child soldiers, who are now just 14, 15, and 16 years old, discuss their lives in the bush and reflect on their aspirations for the future. Produced by a team from Doctors Without Borders, which has been providing medical care in eastern Congo for over 15 years, the trilogy offers a moving account of the impact years of fighting has had on Congo’s youth. Watch this final installment below, and don’t miss the first two videos, Survive and Express.
