Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission Briefing on U.S. Strategy to Stop Joseph Kony & LRA

August 10, 2015 @ 10:00 am

Please join the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission for a congressional staff briefing on the U.S. strategy to stop Joseph Kony and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The briefing will feature Enough Project's Sasha Lezhnev.

While the United States and regional partners have had great success with the counter-LRA mission, the work is not yet done. 2015 has seen an increase in attacks by LRA forces and increased abductions of civilians. Joseph Kony and several of his top commanders remain at large. Additionally, more than 200,000 civilians are still displaced from their homes, and many lack essential humanitarian assistance.

On July 30, H. Res. 394 was introduced by Representatives McGovern and Pitts that condemns Joseph Kony and the LRA for continuing to perpetrate crimes against humanity, war crimes, and mass atrocities. A Senate counterpart, S. Res. 237, was introduced by Senators Boozman, Durbin and Inhofe.

Representatives from three non-governmental organizations dedicated to raising awareness and ensuring accountability for the atrocities committed by LRA will be joining the briefing.

Panelists:

  • Paul Ronan, Project Director, The Resolve LRA Crisis Initiative
  • Sasha Lezhnev, Associate Director of Policy for Congo, Great Lakes Region, and LRA, The Enough Project
  • Ananda Robie, Director of Supporter Engagement, Invisible Children

If you have any questions please contact Kevin Murphy (for Rep. McGovern) at 202-225-3599 or [email protected], or Lena Smith (for Rep. Pitts) at 202-225-4576 or [email protected].
