Lemkin Summit: A National Gathering of the Next Generation of Human Rights Defenders

February 21, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - February 23, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

Join us for the Lemkin Summit, a 3-day conference, for the opportunity to connect and strategize with students and community activists from across the country who care about and are taking action toward ending and preventing Genocide and mass atrocities. The conference will be filled with expert panels and guest speakers covering issues ranging from women and youth in conflict to U.S. government responses to Genocide and mass atrocities, as well as informational sessions on conflict areas including Burma, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria. Attendees will also participate in advocacy trainings and learn how to leverage their connections, social media, and other resources to engage their communities in these issues toward growing this movement. The final day of the conference will be a lobby day on Capitol Hill.

The Lemkin Summit is named in honor of Raphael Lemkin, a Polish-Jewish lawyer who was an ardent activist and tireless defender of human rights. Lemkin coined the term "genocide" in 1944, lobbied the UN for genocide to be added to international law, and participated in the drafting of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Sponsoring organizations for the summit include: Enough Project, Jewish World Watch, STAND, and UN Youth to End Sexual Violence.
