On June 3rd, the Enough Project joined 10 other NGOs in writing to Senators McConnell and Reid, urging them to arrange a confirmation vote for the nominated Ambassador to South Sudan as soon as possible during the June 2015 work session.
The U.S. government has been without a confirmed Ambassador to South Sudan since August 2014. The lack of a permanent top diplomat in a country in the throes of one of the world’s most deadly, costly and geopolitically destabilizing civil wars has hindered the U.S.’ sustained engagement with the parties to the conflict to end the crisis or increased the challenges faced by the U.S. Mission in South Sudan.
The current nominee is Mary Catherine Phee, a career Foreign Service Officer, who was first nominated in September 2014. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously voted her out of Committee on May 21, 2015.
Letter signatories include: Better World Campaign, The Enough Project, Humanity United, Jewish World Watch, International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, Oxfam America, Relief International, Save the Children, United to End Genocide, and Water for South Sudan.
