Great Lakes Policy Forum: Elections, Conflict and Violence Against Civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo

May 18, 2017 @ 9:30 am - 11:00 am

Associate Director of Policy Sasha Lezhnev will join other experts at the Great Lakes Policy Forum to discuss the political crisis in Congo and what U.S. and international policy measures are needed to get back to implementation of the December 31 democratic transition accord.

Forum Details:
The expiration of President Kabila’s term of office at the end of 2016 without a full transition of power has triggered protests and ushered in a period of political uncertainty in the Democratic Republic of Congo. At the same time, hundreds of civilians, police, and UN staff have been killed as local conflicts escalated into violence in Tanganyika, the Kasais and North Kivu. These crises have created a new wave of displacement and underscored the fragile situation in many parts of the country.

Please join us for a discussion with Vianney Bisimwa, head of Search for Common Ground’s Goma Office, along with experts from civil society and the State Department as they discuss risks of violence against civilians, mitigation strategies, and accountability as the Democratic Republic of Congo enters a period of uncertainty.

This event will be on-the-record. Registration is Required
