On April 19th, 2009, I attended the Youth United for Darfur rally in Chicago, Illinois. The rally was held by a coalition of 40 Chicago youth and student groups. At the rally, the coalition issued a stern call to the Obama administration to take swift action to promote peace and justice in Darfur. The coalition also used the rally to celebrate the culmination of its fundraising drive for the Enough Project’s Sister Schools Program and the Sudanese Community Center in Naperville, IL. Today, Enough and its partners in the Darfur Dream Team launched the Darfur Dream Team’s Sister Schools Program. The idea for the program was hatched during Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady’s trip to Darfuri refugee camps in eastern Chad with Enough’s John Prendergast and Omer Ismail, where he witnessed firsthand the deplorable state of life in refugee camps and heard the refugees’ grave stories. Houston Rockets star Tracy McGrady and John Prendergast of the Enough Project have co-authored an ESPN op-ed about their journey to eastern Chad. During this trip, Tracy and John, along with Enough adviser Omer Ismail, listened to the harrowing stories of Darfuri refugee children caught in the conflict. Upon his return, Tracy made a commitment to provide Darfuri children with quality education.
