Muhajiriya: The Moment of Truth for UNAMID, the Obama Administration, and the United Nations

Muhajiriya: The Moment of Truth for UNAMID, the Obama Administration, and the United Nations
One hundred and ninety six peacekeepers from UNAMID, the joint AU/UN peacekeeping force for Darfur, are stationed in Muhajiriya, a rebel-held town of 30,000 in South Darfur. The government of Sudan has requested that UNAMID withdraw these troops, as it masses its military forces outside the town and uses airpower to bombard nearby camps for displaced persons. Thousands of civilians have gathered outside the UNAMID base in Muhajiriya, just as thousands gathered around similar bases in Rwanda and Bosnia. Khartoum's intention is clear: a full-scale assault on Muhajiriya regardless of the cost to civilians. Given UNAMID's mandate to protect civilians, ...

Congo’s Dangerous Crossroads

Congo's Dangerous Crossroads
Last week’s arrest of Congolese rebel leader Laurent Nkunda and the deployment of an estimated 4,000 Rwandan soldiers into eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, or DRC, as part of joint Rwandan-Congolese military operations against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, or FDLR, represent a major, and dangerous, crossroads ...

Somalia: Rushing to New Risks in Somalia

Somalia: Rushing to New Risks in Somalia
A rushed political process in Somalia now risks undermining the very unity government it seeks to promote and may inadvertently give momentum to radical Islamists. Somali political figures are meeting this week in Djibouti in an effort to select a new, more inclusive Transitional Federal Parliament and a new President to replace Abdullahi Yusuf, who resigned under pressure in December 2008. This is a positive development, and if successful would represent an important step forward in promoting reconciliation and strengthening the role of political moderates while helping to marginalize hardliners and jihadists. Given the importance of this exercise, it must ...

China tries to let Bashir off the hook

China tries to let Bashir off the hook
On January 7, Beijing’s Special Envoy to Sudan Liu Guijin told reporters that China wants to postpone the indictment of Sudanese President Bashir “so the international community could have more time to address the problem.” “More time” is precisely what Darfur’s over two million and counting displaced residents cannot afford. President Bashir has a record of directing his military forces and proxy militias to systematically target civilians not only in Darfur but throughout Sudan. Absent significant changes in the behavior of his government, civilians will continue to suffer and be targeted by government attacks. Back in July 2008, when China ...

Beyond Crisis Management in Eastern Congo (Activist Brief)

Beyond Crisis Management in Eastern Congo (Activist Brief)
The beleaguered people of North Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are justifiably angry. Despite the international community’s $500 million investment in 2006 elections and the world’s largest United Nations peacekeeping mission (costing more than $1 billion per year), the current round of fighting is the most destructive since 2005 and the latest chapter in more than 12 years of near continuous warfare ...
