Tufts Africana Studies Conference

February 5, 2016 @ 9:40 am - 10:50 pm

The Fletcher School Africana Club is pleased to present the 3rd Annual Africana Conference, From Rhetoric to Action: Getting Things Done in Modern Day Africa, to be held on February 5th, 2016 at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. J.R. Mailey, Enough Project Senior Policy Analyst for Natural Resources and Conflict, will speak on a panel entitled Illicit Trade. More information below.

Discourse surrounding Africa’s emergence often focuses on challenges rather than opportunities. The 2016 Fletcher School Africana Conference will move beyond the conventional discourse to uncover and inspire the implementation of actionable solutions for some of the most critical challenges facing Africa today. Panelists are encouraged to share insights, best practices, and success stories from their professional experience that will be compiled into a conference report for distribution to all conference participants.

Fletcher students represent a diverse cross-section of individuals who have come from, and will be returning to, decision-making positions at private, public and nonprofit firms engaging with the continent. Their desire to move beyond rhetoric and improve their ability to execute change in modern-day Africa is reflected in the choice of this year’s panels and speakers.

Illicit Trade Panel
How do we work together to stop conflicts fueled by illicit trade? Who is on the ground investigating issues of illicit trade and what solutions do they see for the future?

Illicit trade continues to be a driver of conflict and instability throughout the African continent. A diverse group of stakeholders will examine this complex topic and highlight innovative government, private sector, and community solutions.
