Striking Photos Highlight CAR’s Hidden Conflict

Posted by Nathalia Dukhan on July 15, 2016
On July 12, the French news outlet Le Monde published a series of breathtaking photos taken by French photographer William Daniels on the Central African Republic's hidden conflict.

William first visited CAR in November 2013 and has since taken nine trips to the country. Quoted by Le Monde, William said that for his first five trips, he mostly covered the news, but after that, he wanted to achieve more personal photos, with a focus on the causes and circumstances of the CAR conflict with a more documentary approach.

All 13 photos were taken in various remote areas of CAR, including in the Ndassima gold mine, located in the east of the country. The gold mine continues to be controlled by militiamen under the command of Ali Darassa, a well-known warlord of Chadian origin responsible for mass atrocities against the population.
