Statement by the Enough Project and Coalition Partners on the Violence in South Sudan

Posted by Sandi Fox on April 28, 2014

Today, the Enough Project and coalition partners released an urgent statement in response to vicious attacks against civilians in South Sudan, including the recent attacks in Bentiu and Bor. What was at the outset a political confrontation between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, has taken on an ethnic character. The conflict threatens to destabilize the entire region and requires the immediate attention of the international community to stop the killing. If not, the targeting of civilians based on ethnicity will continue to disintegrate into genocide.

The statement calls on both sides to: (a) fully implement the Cessation of Hostilities agreement signed in January, (b) allow for immediate humanitarian access to prevent mass starvation, (c) permit the full investigation of human rights atrocities by the African Union’s High Level Commission of Inquiry; and (d) ensure accountability for atrocities committed by forces on both sides.

The coalition statement also calls on the international community to provide additional peacekeepers dedicated to the protection of civilians, as well as punitive measures against those that continue to undermine the peace process. The Enough Project and coalition partners strongly support regional efforts led by the Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union, including the deployment of an IGAD protection and deterrent force.

The statement released today reflects the immediate need for increased civilian protection in South Sudan. The Enough Project and coalition partners remain dedicated to the long-term peace process currently underway in Addis Ababa.
