Sign the Petition: Africa's Great Lakes Needs a Special Envoy
The Enough Project, along with our partners Africa Faith & Justice Network, A Thousand Sisters, Falling Whistles, Free the Slaves, Friends of the Congo, Jewish World Watch, and STAND, has started a petition asking President Obama and Secretary Clinton to appoint a special envoy to the Great Lakes region.
As a senator, President Obama introduced the Democratic Republic of Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act that was signed into law in 2006. A central aspect of this law is the appointment of a special envoy to the Great Lakes region. Enough has long been in favor of this appointment, in order to ensure strong U.S. diplomatic engagement in the region as well as to prevent the issue of the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo from falling through the cracks amid the U.S. government’s myriad foreign policy priorities. As stated in the petition, “A senior-level envoy for the Great Lakes region, reporting directly to the Secretary of State, is essential to pulling together a comprehensive policy for Congo and making a positive difference in the region.”
Sign our petition to voice your support for President Obama and Secretary Clinton to appoint a special envoy to the Great Lakes region. Please spread the word about our petition and the importance of appointing a special envoy. Check back to Raise Hope for Congo and the Enough Said blog for updates on how the effort progresses.
