CNN's 'Amanpour': John Prendergast on the Future of South Sudan

A year after celebrating its independence, South Sudan sits on the brink of war with Sudan.

CNN's Christiane Amanpour sat down with Enough Project Co-founder John Prendergast to discuss South Sudan's future and the critical steps both Sudan and South Sudan must take to ensure peace.

Interview begins at 5:50

In the segment, Prendergast and Amanpour discuss the range of economic, political, and humanitarian issues facing Sudan and South Sudan.

Amanpour describes the situation as a "bad divorce" where oil is the main point of contention. Prendergast explains that South Sudan has the majority of the two countries' oil fields, but that same oil must go through the pipelines and refineries Sudan.

A U.N. Security Council resolution recently set forth conditions and corresponding deadlines for both countries to work towards to achieve peace. But as the final deadlines for the resolution nears, both Sudan and South Sudan must begin to comply or both states may face sanctions.

Prendergast, who has been working to end the violence in Sudan since the early 1990s, says both sides need to compromise and agree on revenue sharing and border demaraction to move forward peacefully.
